The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has said that protesters who went violent over detention of the alleged killers of Deborah Yakubu, did not kill or injure anyone during Saturday’s attack on the Holy Family Cathedral, Sokoto.

In a statement on Saturday signed by the Director of Communications Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Christopher Omotosho, the church said the guards repelled the protesters although “the mob burnt St. Kevin’s Catholic Church in Sokoto.”

The statement said the attack on the Holy Family Catholic Cathedral, destroyed the church’s glass windows, those of the Bishop Lawton Secretariat, and vandalized a community bus parked within the premises.

According to Omotosho, “The hoodlums also attacked the Bakhita Centre located along Aliyu Jodi road and burnt down a bus within the premises.

Meanwhile, Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Bishop of the diocese, has commended Governor Tambuwal and the security forces in the state for promptly rising to the occasion to prevent further damage at the church, Omotosho said.

He also revealed that while suspending “all Masses” in the metropolis until the government lifts the curfew, Bishop Kukah called on Christians to remain law-abiding and pray for the return of normalcy.
